Reducing Dropout Rates: RAMP Program Support for Apprentices
In the skilled trades industry, dropout rates among apprentices, particularly Black apprentices, have been a pressing concern. The high percentage of first-year dropouts, estimated at 47% in California, highlights the need for targeted support and intervention to ensure the success and retention of apprentices from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds.

To address this challenge, the Retention Apprentice Mentoring Program (RAMP) has been at the forefront of providing crucial mentorship, case management, and support services for apprentices. RAMP is a nonprofit initiative that aims to empower apprentices to not only complete their training but also to establish thriving, long-term careers in the trades.
One of the key distinguishing features of RAMP is its focus on reducing dropout rates specifically among Black apprentices. By offering a blend of mentorship, advocacy, and culturally responsive support, RAMP strives to bridge the gap and provide the necessary guidance for apprentices to overcome barriers and succeed in their chosen field.
Through RAMP, apprentices are connected with knowledgeable mentors who can provide valuable insights and support. Additionally, the program offers a range of support services, career development resources, and personalized assistance to help apprentices navigate real-life challenges that may impede their progress. In order to further its mission and impact, RAMP is actively involved in recruiting more apprentices, attracting volunteer mentors, fostering relationships with union and industry partners, securing funding and support, and promoting its identity and unique mission. By providing comprehensive resources and advocating for the success of all apprentices, RAMP is striving to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals pursuing careers in the trades.
As RAMP continues to expand its reach and influence, its commitment to reducing dropout rates and supporting apprentices in their journey towards successful careers remains unwavering. Through collaboration, mentorship, and a dedication to cultural responsiveness, RAMP is paving the way for a more inclusive and thriving workforce in the skilled trades industry.
